Whether it’s for peak production, vacation coverage or just a general practice at your company, at one time or another you may have a need for contingent team members. When that time comes, you want to make sure that they are as efficient and productive as possible. There are steps that you can take, before a placement begins and while on location, to ensure that team members are ready and fully prepared for work. Here are five tips to boost your contingent team members’ potential and make sure they are set up to succeed:
- Determine whom you need and define required skills.
Meet with managers and those who will be working with the team members to determine which skills are ideal for the positions you are trying to fill. Benchmark your top performers to identify the skills that have made them successful. Finally, provide your employment service with as much detail about your needs as possible. The more closely a team member matches your requirements, the more successful they’ll be on the job. - Work with an experienced workforce development team.
An employment service with experience in your industry knows how to source and screen the best talent. In addition, they will be able to help you determine things such as an appropriate pay rate for a particular position, if you’ve never had that type of need before. - Provide a solid orientation program.
Designate a core staff member to help orient new team members. Review information such as working hours, breaks and lunch schedules, any safety regulations or company rules, and contact information for direct supervisors. Find out what type of training and orientation your workforce partner can provide. Good services will offer guidance on how to best bring team members up to speed quickly–and they may even conduct initial training and orientation for you. - Establish open, two-way communication.
Make sure your contingent team members know what’s expected from them (putting expectations in writing is helpful). Encourage them to ask questions, and make sure they know to whom they should direct those questions. Your team members will spend more time on-task and less time looking for the answers they need. - Check in regularly.
Take a minute or two at several points throughout the first day to check in and gauge progress. Set specific days/times you plan to check in throughout the placement to answer any questions and monitor progress. And if a team member isn’t performing up to your expectations, address poor performance. Partner with your employment service to work with or even replace the individual if needed.
